SEO vs GEO: how travellers find businesses in the AI era

Short answer: SEO gets your pages ranked in search results; GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) gets your business named in AI answers — when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini "who runs good Ladakh bike trips?" The foundations overlap, but GEO adds specific, checkable work — and most travel businesses in India have done none of it, which makes it an early-mover opportunity.

What actually changed

A growing share of travel planning now starts as a conversation with an AI assistant instead of ten open tabs. Assistants answer from what their crawlers have read on the open web, weighted toward sources that are clear, factual and consistent. Three consequences for a travel business:

  • There is no "page 2" in an AI answer. The assistant names a handful of businesses or none. Being extractable and trustworthy matters more than ever.
  • Facts beat adjectives. "South India's premier travel experience" gives an AI nothing to work with. "5-day Coorg–Wayanad package, ₹18,500 per person, daily departures from Bangalore" is quotable.
  • Blocked crawler = invisible business. Many Indian hosting firewalls block AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) by default, silently. If they can't read your site, you cannot appear in their answers — no matter how good the site is.

The GEO checklist for a travel business

  1. Unblock the crawlers. Test with curl -A "GPTBot" https://yoursite.com/ — a 403 means your firewall is hiding you from ChatGPT. Allowlist GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended.
  2. Say who you are in one plain sentence on every key page: "X is a tour operator in Hyderabad running Kerala and Kashmir group tours since 2015." AI answers lift exactly these sentences.
  3. Publish extractable facts: prices (at least "from ₹—"), durations, departure points, group sizes, inclusions. Vague pages don't get cited.
  4. Add structured data: Organization/LocalBusiness, Service, TouristTrip per package, FAQPage. This is machine-readable truth about your business.
  5. Answer real questions as H2s with direct answers beneath ("Is December a good time for the Rann of Kutch tour? Yes — …").
  6. Ship an llms.txt — a plain-language summary of your business, services, prices and URLs at yoursite.com/llms.txt.
  7. Keep facts consistent across your site, Google Business Profile and social bios — inconsistency reads as unreliability to both engines and models.
  8. Check monthly: ask each assistant the questions your customers would ask ("best homestay near Araku", "reliable taxi Hyderabad to Srisailam") and track whether you appear.
Anyone promising "guaranteed placement in ChatGPT answers" is lying — the models don't sell placement. What's real is the groundwork above: verifiable, checkable, and done properly by very few of your competitors so far. Every MediaBani site ships with items 1–6 built in; see SEO & GEO.

Frequently asked questions

Do people really book travel through AI assistant recommendations?
Increasingly, yes — assistants are used for itinerary planning, and when they name a specific operator or homestay with a reason, users follow up directly. Volumes are smaller than Google today but growing fast, and far fewer businesses are competing for those mentions.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Google still drives most traffic, and Google's own AI features draw on the same crawl. GEO is additional work layered on strong SEO foundations — about 70% overlap, 30% AI-specific (structured data depth, llms.txt, crawler access, entity-clear phrasing).
How do I check if my website is blocked for AI crawlers?
Run curl -A "GPTBot" https://yoursite.com/ (or ask us to check free). If you get 403 Forbidden instead of your page, your firewall or security plugin is blocking AI crawlers and you're invisible to those assistants.
What is llms.txt?
A plain-text file at yoursite.com/llms.txt summarising who you are, what you offer, prices and key URLs — written for AI systems to read, like robots.txt's descriptive cousin. It's an emerging convention: cheap to add and increasingly consumed.
